The narrow depth of field is so effective. If the background had been white/ plain I might have been immediately uninterested. If the background is as it was but without the narrow depth of field then I would have been too overwhelmed and confused about the whole image. This... combination of an interesting background with the sharper focus of the subject is just about right. It makes me interested not just in the model but also the background - "what's that there then?" It makes me interested in the whole thing.
The model herself is very interesting. In this shot she is very expressive - her face and her pose. Her general appeal is also expressive - the red hair, the make up, the piercing and the tattoo. It makes me think about her, what she might be like, what her voice would sound like. She seems sexy and I want to know if she really is in life; the picture makes me think that it IS possible to deduce from this photo what she really is like in life because you photograph her with such honesty.
